I've often wondered the same thing Max. I really believe it's due to too oil neglect. I never had to watch oil levels this closely on my other bikes, but the Savage doesn't hold much to begin with. Also I don't trust what the manual says about keeping the level between the upper and lower marks on the window. I always keep the window full. Also, like I've stated before, I use a synthetic blend oil. I don't have nad interest in promoting expensive synthetics but I think my results speak for itself. It would be interesting to know if a Savage engine could hold out as long on regular oil. Ride safe
